Eligo is building a platform technology that engineers phage particles (Eligobiotics) to deliver therapeutic DNA to (re)program a wide range of bacterial species in-situ. With such a capability, Eligo is developing a new generation of drugs allowing precision microbiome engineering.

To be able to translate our research to the clinic, we need to design and engineer bacterial strains, therapeutic DNA circuits and phage genomes which will be used to produce our Eligobiotics.

We are therefore looking for a synthetic biologist who has experience with non-model bacteria engineering and/or phage engineering and is excited to tackle the ambitious challenges of engineering non-model bacteria and their associated phages to develop new Eligobiotics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize genetic tools in non-model bacteria for strain and phage engineering
  • Build, test, debug and optimize genetic circuits in non-model bacteria
  • Tune genetic expression on developed circuits for efficient function in target bacterial species
  • Engineer new DNA packaging and delivery systems based on engineered phages
  • Work hand-in-hand with other scientists to accelerate the process of Eligobiotics engineering

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field (i.e., molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, etc).
  • Demonstrated strong experience with non-model bacteria including anaerobic bacteria
  • Demonstrated experience with state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques (i.e. Gibson, Golden gate or CRISPR, etc)
  • Phage expertise is a plus
  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail and accuracy and an ability to work independently to solve technical problems
  • Ability to multitask without compromising quality and accuracy
  • Effective management of time and effort to meet deadlines
  • Strong interactive skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
